Good morning. To those of you just added to this e-mail you can read the series of e-mail's from the bottom up to get the rest of the story on Lorie.
I just came from the hospital. Lorie's blood pressure and other vital signs are better today. Her kidneys are functioning a little better today than they have the past couple of days. Instead of 14 bags of stuff going into her she only had 5 this morning. She had 4 hours of dialysis last night which really helped her. Her color looked really good this morning. The nurse said she has started a little movement even though she's still unconscious, which is really good news. She bit down on her tube last night so they had to sedate her so she wouldn't start pulling them out. We were all so excited because she bit the tube! Anyway, I'll go on.
The neurologist saw her last night and then came in to talk to the family. Those of us from work that were there were allowed to stay and listen. I'll explain it to you the best I can. There are three parts to the brain, the top part, which is the cognitive area and controls whether you wake up or not. That's where her damage is. The next is the brain stem and then the spinal cord. I think everyone pretty much knows what those two control. He did some weird tests on her and said the responses he got were exactly what he wanted to get. He poured cold water in her ear which caused her eyes to move. Never heard that one before! Anyway, he was pleased with the results. He said the damage occurred when her heart started racing which caused oxygen not to get to her brain and other organs like it should. That, coupled with the cardiac arrest, the massive infection, and the surgery all contributed to the problem. The neurologist has already been in this morning and they are preparing her for the brain test. He will be giving the results to the family at noon and I will be there with them and will report back to you when I get back to the office. He wants to do a CT scan and MRI but he said she is too unstable to move right now so that will have to wait.
They won't know how much damage there is, if any, until the tests are complete and she's fully awake. He said she is by no means out of the woods and it's just too early to tell what her prognosis is.
Her family asked me to tell you all thank you so much for your prayers and concern. They've never seen a company care so much for an employee and do all that you have done. We all believe in the power of prayer and I believe with all my heart that's why she's doing so well. Please continue to keep Lorie and her family in your prayers. Thank you so much.
Yvonne
